AP: Meenakshi energy marks sustainability milestone with single-use plastic-free certification

Vijayawada, Oct 13 (UNI) Meenakshi Energy Limited (MEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Vedanta Power Limited, has received a sustainability milestone Single-Use Plastic-Free certification from Indian Register Quality Systems (IRQS) for its 1,000 MW facility in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.
The certification recognises MEL’s plant-wide efforts to eliminate single-use plastics, strengthen waste segregation and recycling, and embed responsible resource consumption across its operations. The certification follows the implementation of a plant-wide ban on single-use plastics across all operations, including administrative, food service and procurement functions, a release stated.
MEL has replaced commonly used single-use plastic products with reusable or environmentally preferable alternatives, while also introducing measures to ensure that sustainability requirements extend across its supply chain. As part of the initiative, single-use plastic cutlery, containers and packaging in canteens have been replaced with wooden and other alternatives, aluminum foil and reusable products.
The facility has also moved away from disposable plastic cups, small PET bottles and water pouches, introducing reusable glass bottles and stainless-steel glasses across offices, hostels and canteens, supported by drinking-water dispensers.
Rajinder Singh Ahuja, CEO, Vedanta Power Limited, said: "Environmental stewardship is an important part of how we operate at Vedanta Power. Meenakshi Energy’s Single-Use Plastic-Free certification demonstrates how sustainability commitments can translate into tangible changes across all its operations.”
“By reducing plastic consumption, strengthening circular waste-management systems and encouraging wider participation by employees and business partners. MEL is contributing meaningfully to Vedanta’s 'Transforming the Planet' philosophy and setting a benchmark for responsible industrial operations,” he added.
Speaking on the achievement, K B Binu Raphael, CEO & Director, Meenakshi Energy Limited, said: “At Meenakshi Energy, we believe that meaningful environmental progress begins with the choices we make every day at the plant. Our focus has been on translating our sustainability commitments into action through responsible resource management, stronger waste management practices and the active involvement of our people.”
“We are committed to building a culture where environmental responsibility is shared across functions and reflected in everyday decisions. This certification is an important milestone in that journey and reinforces our resolve to continuously raise the bar on sustainable operation,” he observed.
To eliminate single-use plastics across operations, MEL has introduced a mandatory prohibition clause in new purchase orders requiring eco-friendly or 120 micron packaging, replaced vinyl banners and disposable plastic folders with durable signage and cardboard, and brought sample collection materials under an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) supplier buyback scheme.
